Yellow Emperor — Founder of Chinese Civilization and Source of Wellness

Era: ca. 2717-2599 BCE

Yellow Emperor (ca. 2717-2599 BCE). The Yellow Emperor, ancestor of the Chinese nation and cultural progenitor. He established medicine, calendar, and music theory, and authored the Huangdi Neijing with Qibo, laying the theoretical foundation of Chinese wellness culture.

1. Progenitor of Huaxia: From Tribal Alliance to Civilizational Foundation

The Yellow Emperor, surnamed Ji, titled Xuanyuan, is revered as the "First Ancestor of Culture." He reportedly lived ca. 2717-2599 BCE and was the leader of the Huaxia tribal confederation. At the Battle of Zhuolu, the Yellow Emperor allied with the Yan Emperor to defeat Chiyou, unifying the central plains and laying the foundation of Chinese civilization.

2. Discourse with Qibo: The Birth of the Huangdi Neijing

One of the Yellow Emperor's greatest cultural contributions was his dialogue with minister Qibo. These conversations were compiled into the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), divided into the Suwen (Simple Questions) and Lingshu (Spiritual Pivot), totaling eighteen volumes. This classic systematically expounded theories of yin-yang, five elements, organ systems, meridians, pathology, and wellness, revered as the "ancestor of medicine."

3. Core Principles of Wellness Thought

The concept of "treating before illness arises" (zhi weibing) proposed in the Huangdi Neijing is the core of Chinese wellness culture. The Yellow Emperor believed that sages treat disease before it manifests, just as they govern before chaos erupts. This principle emphasizes prevention through cultivating vital qi, harmonizing with seasons, and balancing emotions.

4. Establishing Calendar and Musical Tuning

The Yellow Emperor ordered Danao to create the sexagenary cycle, Rongcheng to devise the calendar, and Linglun to craft musical tuning from bamboo. The sexagenary cycle remains in use today. The musical tuning system also relates to wellness — the five tones (gong, shang, jue, zhi, yu) correspond to the five organs, forming a unique musical wellness system.

5. Modern Value of Yellow Emperor's Wellness Arts

The Yellow Emperor's wellness thought holds significant practical value today. The guiding principle of "following the patterns of yin and yang, harmonizing with arts and numbers" emphasizes alignment with natural rhythms. The lifestyle guidance of "moderate eating and drinking, regular daily rhythms, and no excessive labor" aligns closely with modern preventive medicine.

6. The Transmission Lineage: Yellow Emperor to Pengzu

Pengzu is a descendant of the Yellow Emperor. According to the Records of the Grand Historian, Pengzu was the great-great-grandson of Emperor Zhuanxu, who was the Yellow Emperor's grandson. Thus, Pengzu's wellness arts are directly descended from the Yellow Emperor's medical thought — from Rongcheng Gong, Su Nü, and Xuan Nü to Pengzu, forming an unbroken chain of ancient wellness transmission originating from the Yellow Emperor.
