Pengzu — The Great Synthesizer of Chinese Wellness Culture

Era: ca. 2250-1450 BCE (legendary 800-year lifespan)

Pengzu (ca. 2250-1450 BCE (legendary 800-year lifespan)). Pengzu, also known as Peng Keng, said to have lived 800 years. He synthesized daoyin, dietary therapy, and bedroom cultivation, becoming the great synthesizer of Chinese wellness culture and revered as its founding ancestor.

1. Eight Hundred Years: The Legendary Life of Pengzu

Pengzu, originally named Peng Keng, is said to be the great-great-grandson of Emperor Zhuanxu. According to the Records of the Grand Historian, "Lu Zhong had six sons; the third was Pengzu." He was enfeoffed at Pengcheng (modern Xuzhou), hence the surname "Peng." Legend holds that he lived 800 years, spanning the Xia and Shang dynasties, making him the longest-lived figure in Chinese mythology.

2. Three Arts Unified: The Complete Structure of Pengzu's Wellness System

Pengzu's great contribution was fusing Rongcheng Gong's bedroom arts, the theories of Su Nü and Xuan Nü, and various daoyin and dietary methods into a unified "Three Arts in One" wellness system. The three arts are: Daoyin (dynamic exercise), Bedroom Arts (internal cultivation), and Dietary Therapy (food nourishment), covering the three dimensions of movement, internal regulation, and nutrition.

3. Daoyin Arts: Nourishing the Body Through Movement

Pengzu's daoyin emphasizes that "when the body does not move, vitality does not flow." His "Pengzu Daoyin Method" includes stretching, breath regulation, and joint exercises. This system pursues "dynamic and static balance" — movement to regulate form, stillness to nourish spirit, resonating with modern rehabilitation concepts.

4. Bedroom Arts: Nourishing Essence Through Internal Cultivation

Pengzu inherited the bedroom arts tradition from Rongcheng Gong and Su Nü but systematized it further. He proposed the core principle of "moderating desires and preserving essence," emphasizing the "returning essence to nourish the brain" technique. Pengzu believed that vital essence is the root of human life; preserving essence means preserving life. This concept profoundly influenced later Daoist wellness.

5. Dietary Therapy: Nourishing Life Through Food

Pengzu is called the "ancestor of cooking." He excelled at using food for bodily nourishment, pioneering the concept of "food as medicine." Pengzu's dietary therapy emphasizes "seasonal eating" — nourishing the liver in spring, the heart in summer, the lungs in autumn, and the kidneys in winter. This aligns perfectly with modern nutritional science's seasonal eating recommendations.

6. Global Value of Pengzu's Wellness Culture

The global value of Pengzu's wellness culture is increasingly evident. As Western societies face sub-health, chronic disease, and psychological stress, Pengzu's holistic "Three Arts in One" approach offers an Eastern alternative to Western medicine. The preventive principle of "treating before illness," the holistic view of "unity of heaven and humanity," and the practice of "dual cultivation of nature and life" represent the Eastern wisdom that global health needs demand.
