Era: ca. 2600 BCE

Rongcheng Gong (ca. 2600 BCE). Rongcheng Gong, ancient Daoist figure and minister to the Yellow Emperor. Master of bedroom cultivation and daoyin exercises, regarded as a pioneer of wellness arts whose techniques were transmitted to and expanded by Pengzu.

1. Ancient Daoist Figure: Minister to the Yellow Emperor

Rongcheng Gong, also known as Rongcheng Shi, was an ancient Daoist figure. He was reportedly a minister to the Yellow Emperor, expert in astronomy, calendar-making, and wellness arts. According to the Zhuangzi, Rongcheng Gong was one who "attained the Dao," his cultivation reaching extraordinary heights. In the Daoist lineage, his status ranks just below the Yellow Emperor.

2. Rongcheng Method: Pioneering Bedroom Wellness

Rongcheng Gong's most significant contribution was the creation of the "Rongcheng Method" — bedroom wellness cultivation. This practice emphasizes vitality regulation, advocating "returning essence to nourish the brain," using specific techniques to preserve essence and strengthen the foundation for longevity. The Rongcheng Method represents one of China's earliest systematic wellness methodologies.

3. Pioneer of Daoyin Arts

Beyond bedroom arts, Rongcheng Gong mastered daoyin — a practice combining physical movements with breath regulation to clear meridians and harmonize qi and blood. He reportedly transmitted daoyin to Pengzu, becoming the source of later practices like the Five Animal Frolics and Eight Brocades.

4. The Connection Between Calendar and Wellness

Rongcheng Gong was commissioned by the Yellow Emperor to create the calendar. The calendar is intimately connected to wellness — only by accurately grasping celestial timing can one "follow the patterns of yin and yang." Rongcheng Gong integrated astronomical observation with wellness practice, embodying the ancient "unity of heaven and humanity" paradigm.

5. Rongcheng Gong's Position in the Transmission Lineage

In the Chinese wellness transmission, Rongcheng Gong occupies a pivotal position. Yellow Emperor → Rongcheng Gong → Pengzu — this is a clear lineage. Rongcheng Gong was both the inheritor of the Yellow Emperor's wellness thought and the transmitter of Pengzu's arts, serving as the crucial link between generations.

6. Modern Insights from the Rongcheng Method

Rongcheng Gong's wellness philosophy remains insightful today. His principle of "moderating desires and preserving essence" reminds modern people to address the balance between desires and health. His concept of "aligning with celestial timing" resonates with findings in modern chronobiology.
